Vogue 1087: The Donna Karan Dress

Dear readers, here is my next finished project ..... During the last two weeks i took some timeout from the digital aera. And even though it was quite here on my blog, i did some sewing. Therefore, i'm a little behind - in blogging but also in reading and commenting on your blogs. This has to change. So let's start with pictures and review of another dress ......

(English)

Beschreibung:

Was magst Du besonders bzw.

Verwendeter Stoff:

Mein Kleid müsste also spiegelverkehrt herauskommen.

Pattern Description:
Fitted dress, below mid-knee, has pleated and tucked front forming wrap effect. Front extends to back at sides, back has zipper and hemline vent. No side seams.

Größen:
4-10 und 12-18 (amerikanische Größen). Ich habe das Kleid in Größe 6 genäht.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, i think so.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
With this dress i made something i usually never do: I followed the instructions step-by-step. Usually i look at the pattern pieces and i approximately know what to sew how and when. This time i didn't had the slightest clue. And that by oneself justifies it to be an "anvanced" pattern. So, i've followed the instruction which are quite understandable. It's just that the pattern pieces and the construction are very unusual.
I didn't understood step 8 and 9 (and still don't). I've tried it several times. And after ripping it off so many times i just skipped this step. And when i was able to put the dress on, i pinned the fabric in a way that looked good and fixated it with a few handstitches.
As mentioned before, i followed the instructions blindly. Unfortunately, they don't tell you when you have to finish your seams. Therefore, my dress doesn't look as beautiful from the inside as i wanted it to be. This i would change the next time (if there is any next time).

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
This pattern combines two features i really do like on a pattern: Draping and a wrap effect. So, i wanted to make this dress, since it came out.

Fabric Used:
about 1.5m Punta di Roma in lightgray

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
I've made mistake while cutting the fabric. I.e. the right pattern piece is on the left and the left pattern piece is on the right instead. Which means my dress is mirror-inverted.

That were the unintended change to the dress. This is what i've done with purpose:
  • I've omitted the zipper. First, i've tried to get into the dress without a zipper (when it was pinned together). It was no problem at all. So i there was need for a zipper, at least from my point of view.
  • Also i left out the vent. No need for that either.
  • Then i shortened the dress at the marked lines about 1cm and additionally at the seam about 2-3cm (but this is due to my body size and not due to the pattern drafting).
  • Last but not least, i took out about 1 cm from the upper and lower back for my swayback adjustment (see sketch, blue lines mark my changes and red lines show the horizontal back seam).

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Ummmhhh, i think this design is too eyecatching, to have more than one of it in your closet. So i probably won't sew it again. But i can recommend it to everyone who like the design of this dress. It is not as much work as it looks. Only the construction is a little bit complicated and unusual. But it's worth the work and you can make your own designer dress for about 10-15 Euro!

Conclusion:
I'm happy with the result. It was my first time sewing an "advanced" pattern and i managed to get through the instructions and the result is alright. The finishing inside is not as nice as i used to, but i can live with that. I think it is a nice dress and a good addition to my closet.

Worn with a cardigan to keep me warm ......

... and the back view (the wrinkle at the necklin is because i've forgotten to iron the facings properly (at all) *tsss tss tsss* ).

What a fantastic dress! And thank you for illustrating the swayback adjustment. This is high on my list of things to sew, but I never would have figured that out.

This dress looks AMAZING on you! I like it with the boots and the sweater looks great with it, too.

I have seen a few reivews of this dress and everyone says the same as you - it is confusing to understand until it is finished. I will try this pattern and take care to follow the instructions.
